The Scottish Maritime Museum (Denny Tank) gets set to welcome everyone with free entry on Saturday 14 September in celebration of this year’s Doors Open Days and the 40th anniversary of the family-friendly attraction. Visitors can explore the Museum on Castle Street, Dumbarton, between 10am - 3pm and discover more about the world-famous Victorian shipbuilder William Denny whose shipyard once stood on the spot the Museum occupies today.

The Scottish Maritime Museum (Denny Tank) celebrates the remarkable history of lighthouses, their keepers and the engineers who made them possible, with a fascinating new exhibition, ‘Following the Lights’. The exhibition, which is now on show at the Museum on Castle Street, Dumbarton, charts Britain’s iconic lighthouse design through centuries of innovation from the first lighthouse in 1635 to the 1821 Fresnel lens - ‘the invention that saved a million ships’ – and the use of solar energy today. ‘Following the Lights’ also offers visitors a unique insight into the working life of lighthouse keepers.

Glengoyne Distillery, located in Dumgoyne, near Killearn, is known for its exceptional single malt whiskies and highly regarded as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery. One of its unique practices is ‘Silent Season’, a dedicated period when the distillery pauses operations for maintenance and repair. Glengoyne Distillery Silent Season at Glengoyne Distillery runs from 28th June to 10th August and this year, Glengoyne is undergoing stillhouse maintenance which allows visitors to experience the other side of distillery life.

Calling all young storytellers! Put your own spin on 5,000 years of history Historic Environment Scotland, Scottish Book Trust and the Scottish Storytelling Forum have just launched an exciting competition called ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ in search of young storytellers across Scotland, aged between eight and twelve, to share a tale featuring a Historic Scotland site. Young creators can submit a written tale (150 to 300 words) or a storytelling video (two minutes long) – in English or Gaelic - by Friday 24th June and will be entered into the competition with a range of great prizes up for grabs!
