New Tour Guides for Maid of the Loch Paddle Steamer
Martin Docherty goes “back to his roots”, volunteering at Maid of the Loch
Maid of the Loch Loch Lomond’s Paddle Steamer, can now offer high quality guided tours of the ship thanks to professional assistance, and input from Martin Docherty.
Anne Urquhart, Director of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, explained: “The charity wanted to offer tours of the Maid which will add to the experience of visitors to the ship, raise her profile and help encourage new support for her – vital over the next period of fundraising and her transition to sailing once more on the Loch”.
The task was to boost the existing volunteer force and establish a tour guide training course which could deliver this training and develop high quality courses for visitors to the ship.
It was a natural choice to turn to Maid supporter Alex Pringle who established Glasgow City Sightseeing bus tours and who helped develop the well-known worldwide brand that we all recognise when we go travelling. Alex responded by also offering his professional training services on a volunteer basis and compiled a course that included history of Loch Lomond area.
Martin Docherty was a young, very able tour guide with Alex’s company when he was still at college, so when asked by Alex he was delighted to come “back to his roots” and do some volunteer assessment for the Tour Guide Training Course.
Martin provided some useful insights to guiding, delighted to return to his roots as a young guide, saying: “I loved being a tour guide. Being able to describe to visitors the very varied and interesting stories of our land and here, in particular, the heritage of the Maid will be a great pleasure and source of pride to these new guides. I’m sure they will have the same fun and enjoyment as I experienced in such a role. Good luck to them all!”
The guided tours will be available on the Maid of the Loch over the summer period on weekend days.
The Maid of the Loch needs more guiding volunteers and full training and uniform will be supplied. ‘Volunteer on Maid of the Loch’ is a useful addition to any CV!
