Alexandria grew from a tiny settlement with the development of textile and dye works in the 19th century. However its most famous factory building was the Argyll Motor Works - in its day building more motor cars than anywhere else in the world. (Unfotunately for Alexandria, that was before Henry Ford came along with his Model T.) Argyll Motors failed, but its building - cutting edge at its opening in 1906 – survives today with more than a hint of marbled splendour. It's a Grade A listed building, now the Loch Lomond Galleries, complete with plenty of shops and café. Well worth a look.
